Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get a private pilot license in DFW?

The average cost for a private pilot license in the DFW area ranges from $10,000 to $15,000, including flight time, ground instruction, books, and checkride fees. Training in your own aircraft can significantly reduce these costs since you're only paying instructor fees rather than aircraft rental rates.

Do I need to own an aircraft to train with you?

No, you don't need to own an aircraft. McKenzie Flight Services offers three options: train in your own aircraft, rent from our established network at multiple DFW airports, or arrange rental from any third-party source you prefer.

What airports do you operate from?

We provide instruction throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, including 52F (Aero Valley), Grand Prairie Municipal (KGPM), Sherman Municipal (KSWI), and other DFW-area airports. We'll meet you at whichever location is most convenient for your training.

How long does it take to get a private pilot license?

Most students complete their private pilot training in 4-8 months with consistent training. The FAA minimum is 40 hours of flight time, though the national average is 60-75 hours. Your timeline depends on training frequency, weather, and individual progress.

Can I train in my own aircraft?

Yes! Training in your own aircraft is one of our specialties. Benefits include lower overall costs, becoming intimately familiar with your aircraft, meeting insurance requirements, and customizing training to your specific airplane's characteristics.

What are your rates?

Instruction rates vary by service: Private Pilot Training ($60/hour), Commercial Training ($75/hour), Biennial Flight Reviews ($70/hour), Checkride Preparation ($75/hour), Ground Training ($35/hour), and Emergency Training ($80/hour). You only pay for instructor time - no aircraft rental markup.

Do you offer weekend and evening training?

Yes, we offer flexible scheduling including weekends and evenings to accommodate working professionals. Mobile instruction throughout DFW means we can meet you at your preferred airport at times that work with your schedule.

What qualifications do you have?

Michael McKenzie holds commercial single- and multi-engine ratings, complex and high-performance endorsements, instrument certification, and CFI credentials. He has nearly 7 years of aviation experience as a pilot, including 3 years in aviation maintenance, plus a degree in Aerospace Administration and Operations from Oklahoma State University.
